2010's Best Selling Cars - How Has The VAT Increase Affected Ownership Costs

One obvious place where the VAT increase is noticeable is with car prices. The 2.5 percent increase may seem minimal with most small and regular purchases, however, this added amount of VAT has a substantial effect on how much you're likely to pay for a car in relation to ownership costs.

As at November 2010, the average annual cost of owning and running a new car had jumped by 6.3% in the previous 12 months, according to RAC's annual Cost of Motoring (CoM) Index. The 346 pounds increase, which is twice the rate of inflation, took average costs up to 5,869 pounds from 5,523 pounds in 2009. This equates to 112.87 pounds per week or 48.91p per mile. The Index addresses the costs of owning and running a new car and includes fuel, insurance, maintenance, road tax, breakdown cover, depreciation and finance.

To show just how much of an effect the VAT increase can have on the cost of car ownership, both for car loans and cash purchases we have taken the following information from Auto Trader, who provide an annual list of the UK's best selling cars, along with their ownership costs in December 2010 and what they cost today due to the VAT increase.

1. BMW 3 Series - costing 26,300 pounds to buy brand new today (or from just 281 pounds excluding VAT if you were to take advantage of one of the many car finance options, such as personal car loans), the average cost of fuel, insurance and tax amounts to 1,695 pounds, 1,299 pounds and 90 pounds respectively, bringing the total cost of ownership to 29,384 pounds.

2. Volkswagen Golf - the car that's getting hit the hardest by the VAT increase in this list, ownership costs for a Volkswagen Golf today stand at 36,426 pounds, made up of 3,223 pounds in petrol, 1,383 pounds in insurance and 425 pounds in tax (plus the initial cost of 31,395 pounds).

Due to the increase on 4 January 2011, however, you have to pay almost 800 pounds more, which includes 668 pounds on the cost of the Golf and nearly 70 pounds extra a year on petrol.

3. Vauxhall Astra - one of the most popular cars currently on the market, due to its functionality as both a young person's car and a great family car, Astra's currently retail at 18,205 pounds on the road, from new. Throw in around 2,400 pounds in petrol, 1,100 in insurance and 125 in car tax and your total ownership costs amount to just over 22,300 pounds.

And whilst the increase in the new year of 440 pounds relates largely to the cost of the car itself - you have to pay over 350 pounds more for an Astra in January 2011 than in December 2010 - the extra 100 pounds for petrol, insurance and tax is a big hike.

Opportunity costs by definition are the benefits forgone by choosing one alternative from the opportunity set (set of alternative actions available to a decision maker). This article will talk about what a possible opportunity cost could have been when President Obama and the government decided to go with an auto industry program and how it has affected that industry now.

Cash for Clunkers, the extremely popular rebate program signed into action by President Obama on June 24, 2009, ended earlier than expected on August 24, 2009 at 8p.m. This was also referred to as CARS - Car Allowance Rebate System. The plan behind this program was to improve both our economy and environment. It was intended to persuade owners of clunkers to trade them in for a $3,500-4,500 rebate towards a new, more fuel efficient vehicle. The clunkers were divided into categories based on their weight and MPG. The hope was the economy would benefit from the purchases and jobs kept, as would the environment with vehicles that had better fuel economy on the road.

- Nearly 690,000 vehicles were traded in during June 24th - August 24th - The total money spent by the government was $2.9 billion - The top five car models purchased were Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Ford Escape, Nissan Versa, and Hyundai Elantra - The top three clunkers traded in were Ford Explorer, Ford F-150, and Dodge Grand Caravan - More than half of the vehicles bought were passenger cars - The average MPG of the new vehicles purchased was 24.9

Not being one of the decision makers for this program, I can only guess as to what other options, or opportunity costs, were discussed when deciding to implement Cash for Clunkers. One idea I have is that a car inventory surplus or forecasted inventory in 2010 would be an opportunity cost. All of the benefits to new car owners, the auto industry, maybe the economy, and the environment may highly outweigh this assumption, but I feel it is worth discussing.

I recently purchased a new vehicle and I was affected by the aftermath of the program. I did not participate in the Cash for Clunkers program for a couple of reasons, but two mainly. One was that I owned my car and enjoyed not having a car payment if I did not have to and the other was that my car, a 2002 Ford Escape, did not qualify as a clunker. As my Escape showed signs of a soon to be demise, I looked into purchasing a new car. This is where I saw an opportunity cost of the program -an abundant car inventory that we, as consumers, are used to.

There are many types of vehicles to choose from, but I was unaware of the limited choices I had when I made my decision on a 2010 Rav4. I thought a little about a passenger car, but know I would only be happy in an SUV. As I told the dealer my specifications on options, features, and color, I realized it would be hard to find. The dealer explained to me that Toyota's Rav4 inventory had taken a large hit being one of their biggest sellers during the Cash for Clunkers program. Since I was specific, I had to wait two weeks to finally be able to take my car home. If this happened at Toyota, it most likely did at other large auto companies too.

All of this lead me to think when the government was weighing each option deciding on this, was a car shortage on their mind? If so, one of the opportunity costs in the set would be to maintain an ample inventory of vehicles. As mentioned before, the benefits of the program in actuality and in the planning process outweighed this, but it may have been considered.

Was Cash for Clunkers good? It all depends on how you look at it and what you determine "good" to be. In my opinion, if it boosted the economy just a little bit and helped the environment, then yes it was. There are many other factors that analysts review when forming their decision, but this program did help our country during a time when we needed it. It pushed some consumers out to buy vehicles in 2009 that may have waited until 2010.

In summary, Cash for Clunkers was a decision made by the President and government to help the economy and environment. If there is an industry-wide decrease in inventory, that is a drawback of the program. But looking at the opposite side of that flaw, there may have been an opportunity cost of keeping a normal inventory in the opportunity set of actions.

2004-2006 Pontiac GTO - Is It Worthy of the GTO Name

Pontiac is guilty of revisionist history in the 2005 GTO sales brochure. In the brochure, a timeline of significant milestones in the 41 year history of the GTO is presented. The 1964 model naturally leads off the timeline. After all, this car flagrantly violated GM's anti-racing edict of 1957 and single handedly defined an entirely new category of automobiles. The 1966 GTO also earns mention as the first of the Ram-Air models, followed by the 400 cubic inch 1967 and then the fabled GTO Judge in 1969. However, from 1970 until the 2004 rebirth - the timeline is blank. It's as if Pontiac has excised all memory of the potent-but-porcine 1971-72 GTO or the underachieving Nova derived 1973 models. And, of course there is zero mention of the puerile Grand-Am based GTO concept that GM paraded around the show circuit in the early nineties.

With the missteps that sullied the reputation of the most famous icon in muscle car history, we can appreciate Pontiac's selective corporate memory. They do however raise legitimate questions about the 2005 GTO. Is this car worthy of the GTO name? Will the new GTO be remembered 20 years hence as one of the "great ones" or will its memory be the victim of a Stalinist purge from the record?

In our opinion, the 2005 GTO is the real article - and in many ways a perfect modern interpretation of the legendary 1964 GTO. We urge you to drive one, because to drive this car is to love this car.

We had the honor of driving an Impulse Blue 2005 GTO six speed at Josephs Pontiac in Norwell, Massachusetts. Josephs has been selling and servicing Pontiacs since 1928 and to this day it's an honored and loved south shore landmark with some of the friendliest people you're likely to meet. This family knows Pontiac, and talk about classic and future Pontiacs with obvious passion. It's a place where neighbors drop by to chat over coffee and you're just as likely to see Aerosmith's Steven Tyler stop in for a tank of fuel. Compared to the soulless auto mega malls, Josephs Pontiac is a direct link back to a better time - and no finer place exists to test drive a legendary Pontiac marque.

Let's start with styling - arguably the most contentious issue surrounding the 2005 GTO. The car magazines have roundly criticized Pontiac for ultra conservative styling that belies the performance capabilities of the car. We say the critics are idiots - or at the least totally ignorant of the original GTO design philosophy. The 1964-67 GTO was NEVER about visual flash. John DeLorean and Jim Wangers started with the spare and unadorned Tempest body. They added a tasteful scooped hood, attractive wheelcovers and subtle sophisticated badges on the grille, fender and decklid. You had to look closely to pick up the visual clues, and we'd bet a good many people walked right by those early GTO's with nary a second glance. The GTO wasn't marketed to drive-thru posers. It was a serious performance machine that kept a low visual profile and did it's talking at the stoplight and dragstrip.

Economic and political considerations also played a part in the GTOs initial styling restraint. The market for the GTO was uncertain, so to minimize capital investments Pontiac needed to make due with the sleekest mid-sized coupe in the existing product portfolio. Pontiac division chief John DeLorean also had to tread lightly for fear of attracting unfavorable attention from the horsepower-phobic GM Executive team. Whatever the reasons, the 1964-67 GTO stands as one of the most tasteful and timelessly styled muscle cars of the era.

The 2005 GTO is a perfect stylistic and economic interpretation of the original. To keep costs low and time to market short, Pontiac raided it's worldwide parts bin to come up with the most handsome rear drive coupe in the stable, the Australian Holden Monaro. Its lines are tight, clean and tasteful. The GTO badging is subtle as are the twin non-functional hood bulges. As in 1964, you have look for the subtle visual clues as to the true nature of this car. Back in the day, gearheads learned to quickly differentiate the heavyweights from the palookas. It seldom was about shiny paint, garish graphics and chrome wheels. The most serious cars were often the most visually unremarkable - and you learned to look for the tiny "426 Hemi" fender emblems, or the steel wheels with DOT legal Mickey Thompsons. You learned to listen for or the choppy idle of a 305 degree solid cam. And so it is with the 2005 GTO. You've got to know what to look for.

Automotive posers won't get it and they likely won't recognize it. And that's fine with us. The 2005 GTO is for people confident in their own skin - people who prefer to kick ass and take names under the radar screen. People like you and me.

In 2005, Pontiac responded to styling criticisms by adding the aforementioned hood scoops and an optional Sport Appearance Package. Our test car was thankfully absent this option. We urge you to boycott the Sport Appearance package as it represents an ominous return of Pontiac's worst styling excesses in the 1980s. The front fascia is blocky and ham-handed, as are the vestigial "gills" over the quad outlet exhaust tips. Our concern is that if enough people purchase this silly option, GM will interpret this as market approval of flash over substance and we'll be back to the days of the "Screaming Chicken" and the Mustang Cobra II. Just say NO!

So what's the 2005 GTO like to drive? Mana baby, pure mana! The full frame doors open and close with a solid thunk - and the upper window frame promises wind, rattle and leak proof glass. The interior is quite simply GM's best. Ever. The full instrument cluster is legible - rimmed in brushed nickel and color keyed to the exterior paint. On our Impulse Blue tester this was an unexpected and elegant touch. The interior panels are finished in matte gloss soft touch padding - a dramatic improvement from GM's traditional glossy hard plastic interior trimming. Interior space is good, seat comfort excellent and visual sightlines good. About the only criticism we could levy at the interior is the steering wheel. While it feels good in your hand, the center pad looks like a giant goofy Shriners hat. This car needs a steering wheel that better emulates the gorgeous GM rosewood wheels from the 1960s.

Twist the key and the starter engages with a satisfying and substantial whirr - like it's spinning over a high compression big block. The 6.0 LS2 V8 roars to life and the exhaust note is intoxicating. Deep, mellow and throaty with not a hint of tinniness. Blip the throttle and the the pipes pop and spit as the revs fall. Think big block power boat and you'd be close to the effect. Close your eyes and it's 1969 all over again!

Clutch takeup is smooth and dead precise. With 400 Lb/ft of torque (SAE net!!) the GTO steps off cleanly and crisply with little driveline lash. The six speed Tremec trans shifts easily, with just the right amount of mechanical notchiness to remind you what's happening on the other end of the lever. An especially nice touch is the slight shifter vibration you feel while accelerating hard in third gear. Anyone who's ever rowed a Muncie M22, Ford Toploader or MoPar A833 through a Hurst shifter knows that feeling. There's a generation of drivers raised on cable shifted, rubber insulated transaxles that have no clue what this feels like!

The ride is firm and precise with no impact harshness over sharp bumps. The steering is satisfyingly sharp with excellent turn in and good road feel. The GTO tracks straight and true with little dartiness on rough pavement. There are no squeaks and rattles and the GTO exudes a hefty solidity and stiffness reminiscent of the Porsche 928. This is a car you could easily live with on a daily basis - equally adept at ferrying Grandma to Bingo as ripping up the back roads.

The GTO LS2 makes a true 400 horsepower. In pre-1972 SAE gross ratings the number is likely around 470 BHP at the flywheel. Compression is a stratospheric 10.9 and the lightweight valvetrain, efficient cylinder head port design and 90mm throttle body make this motor a smooth, torquey and rev happy screamer. Think about that for a moment. 400 horsepower for $33,000 - or about $82.50 per pony. And, you can service it at any of thousands of GM outlets nationwide for pocket change. And it gets 25 MPG per the EPA highway cycle. Given the monumental strides in GM product quality in the past decade, it's a reasonable expectation that the GTO will require only routine maintenance in the course of prudent, conscientious ownership.

The 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo made 400 horsepower and stickered for about $120,000 ($300 per). The 2000 BMW M5 made 400 horses and stickered at about $80,000 ($200 per). And the sticker price of these Teutonic supercars was just the minimum ante. Think $200 oil changes, $1,000 routine maintenance bills and you get idea. These aren't cars for you and me. These are cars for the trust fund kids you knew and hated in college. The GTO is a car for normal people, just like in 1964.

This car flat cranks - and the LS2 pulls cleanly in every gear from idle to the 6,500 redline. The LS2 really comes alive at over 3,000 RPM, and when you stand on the pedal in first or second you ought to have the wheel pointing straight ahead - because the tires are going to break loose. Under more gentle throttle inputs the GTO accelerates without histrionics - just a liquid, seemingly limitless rush to the upper limits of the speedometer. Modern engine management ensures that there are no flat spots in the fuel and spark delivery. Think well tuned LS-6 Chevelle and you'll be in the low-end ballpark of just how effortlessly the GTO accelerates. The shifter is direct with well-defined gates and shift effort appropriate for a supercar. The exhaust note is heavenly, but no so loud as to cause your wife to shrink in her seat from embarrassment.

This is a very serious performance car, and we'd be surprised if the GTO wasn't good for a sub-5 second dash to 60. The quarter mile times ought to be around 13.30 at 108 MPH. These are huge numbers, and vastly superior to ANY stock GTO from the past - including the fabled 1969-70 Ram-Air IV. It's merely a matter of time before companies like Lingenfelter begin marketing supercharger kits and stroker LS2 motors - so if stock isn't fast enough the days of 500 HP GTOs can't be far off.

So, what's the conclusion? We believe that the 2005 GTO is for real and in most ways a true spiritual successor to the original. The styling is handsome, interior exceptional and the driving experience is simultaneously comfortable and thrilling. This is NOT a car for the "bling bling" crowd who live to be seen and endlessly chase the approval of their peer group. It's a car for self confident performance enthusiasts who value substance over style. It's a car for GTO people.

We want this car to succeed because it will presage the permanent return of such cars not only by GM but Ford and Daimler-Chrysler. We urge you to drive it - because you'll likely buy it!

--the year's best car is the one you're glad to have for as long as you own it. Anyone who's bought or leased a car has wished they could change something about the car they bought, or get a completely different one. The root-cause of this regret is generally emotional--their salesman talked them into buying a car before they were ready, they wanted the car now, and rushed into a purchase. Etc. Etc. There are as many reasons for regretting a car purchase as there are cars, unfortunately. So we encourage car buyers to make their decision a rational one instead of an emotional one. Plan on spending three or four months researching cars, financing and insurance before you roll your sleeves up and begin to negotiate. Read a couple of books on car buying (even if you plan to lease your next car or buy a used one);

--spend plenty of time doing research. Talk to people who drive the car you're interested in. Ask them how they like it, what they don't like about it and what they wish they could change. Ask them any questions your research has brought up. Most people are surprisingly honest, and this objectivity can be very helpful.

You can get similar information to this online, but the person who wrote the opinions is generally difficult or impossible to contact, so it's difficult to ask them clarifying questions or ask them for information their review didn't mention

There are a number of good car magazines that we recommend in your research stage, but most people know about them and it seems like a waste of space to spend much time on them--but definitely read everything they have to say about the cars you're interested in;

--don't limit yourself to buying a car in the town or city where you live. The internet is full of people selling cars (including many dealers) who are just as reputable and trustworthy as the people with brick storefronts. A whole cottage industry has sprung up to help you get cars in other towns inspected and shipped to your home. This same thing is true with financing your car and getting insurance for it--the best car of the year, in our opinion, is one you love and one you've spent as little money on as possible;

2 Car Garage Plans - How to Properly Size Your New Garage

Properly sized 2 car garage plans will add value to your home, save you a lot of future aggravation and could save you some money. There are hundreds of free and almost free garage plans available for purchase or immediate download from the internet. Make a bad choice and you may actually decrease the value of your home.

When I recently conducted a home plan search in the 2100 to 2499 square foot category, 40 of the 50 I found were 2 car garage plans. A few of the garages were 24' square (a good thing), with many in the 20' X 20' range (NOT so good) and one 19' wide (ludicrous!).

What kind of cars do you drive? Better yet, what kinds of cars do the future buyers of your home drive? If the world had nothing to store and everyone drove a Mini Cooper, no problem. For the rest of us, plan on 24' square at a minimum.

Why so big? Many of today's popular cars and SUVs are 16 to 17 feet long, leaving little room to walk around the car with the garage door closed. Worse yet, install 18" to 24" deep storage shelves or a 25" deep workbench in front of your cars and there isn't room for you.

With so many people parking their $20,000+ automobiles outside, you would think the C.R.A.P. stored inside was actually worth something. If you do have valuable stuff stored inside, why not make room for your cars, too? Add a garage workbench, a tool box, a few tools and some recreational equipment and things could get really tight.

Compare these two garage plans:

1. Plan one is 20' deep with a 16' long Chevrolet Trailblazer parked inside. With one foot of clearance at the back of the Trailblazer you only have three feet in front. Add a 25" deep workbench and there is 11" left for skinny you. Drive a full sized pickup and you're sunk.

2. Plan two is 24' deep with the same Trailblazer parked inside and one foot of clearance at the back. Now you have nearly five feet between your vehicle and the workbench.

What about width? Most garage planners advise you to leave 30" between cars and any obstruction, including other cars, walls, etc. Why? So you can open your car door and get you and your stuff out without contortions.

Let's again compare two garage plans:

1. Plan one is 20' wide. With 30" between two average cars (about 6'3" wide each) and between your cars and the walls, your garage must be a least 20' wide. There is no room for shelving.

2. Plan two is 24' wide. With 24" shelving on both walls you still have 30" between and beside your cars.

How much more do 2 car garage plans cost? If you buy a house with a 20' square garage and a 30 year, $200,000 mortgage at 6% interest, your payment would be about $1,240 per month. Expanding your garage to 24' square adds 176 square feet to the house and $8,800 to the cost (at $50 per square foot or less for garage space). Your payment increases by about $53 per month. How much are you paying for mini storage?

In addition to valuable storage space, room for a garage workbench, toolbox, shelving, etc., your cars are less likely to get door dings, you won't have to back out of the garage to let someone climb in and your mini storage costs will go down. The resale value of your home will also likely go up in the future and your home may even sell sooner than a similar one with a smaller garage. What's the bottom line? When you search for 2 car garage plans, it really pays to be picky.

11 Simple Steps to Recover Dining Room Chairs

As an upholsterer for over 40 years I have often been asked by people how they can upholster their own dining room chairs. I tell them it is not really that difficult to do once they know the upholstery process of doing things.

I will now go through the process so you can follow the methods most upholsterers use.

Now there are many different kinds of dining room chairs on the market, but the techniques for recovering them follows the same stages.

First thing to do is decide what kind of material you want to use, there are plenty of shops around selling off cuts and end of rolls. This is a good place to start if you want to cut down on costs.

But a warning: make sure the fabric is upholstery material or you are just doing a lot of work for nothing. Using the wrong kind of fabric will mean you will be doing it all again in a year or so. Upholstery fabric has a stronger weave than what is call soft furnishing fabric which is only good for light usage not for putting on chairs.

If you are unsure you can always go to a local upholsterer and see what they have, you may pay a few dollars more but at least it will be proper upholstery fabric.

Secondly how much fabric do you need? This depends on how many chairs you have and how big they are. But a basic rule is you need about 3 metres- 3.5 yards of normal (plain) 54inch- 140cm wide fabric to do 4 dining chairs, seats and backs. If it is high back chairs you can add a couple more metres just to be on the safe side.

For this article I will assume your chairs are the standard kind with the screw off envelope backs and bordered seats. If not the methods explained here will still work but you will have to improvise a bit.

1. First thing to do is turn the chair upside down and unscrew the seats from the frame, now unscrew the back as well. The seats will be easy to unscrew but the back screws maybe hidden under a plug that has to be removed first.

2. Once you have them unscrewed start to take the old covers off, you can use a flat screw driver to remove the staples if you don't have proper staple removing tools.

3. Now that you have the old cover off you can use them to make templates with. When using old covers as templates make sure you mark them where they sew together, a stroke with a pen on the top and the boarder around the seat will do as a mark. Mark at least three times front sides and back if you like. Do the same for the backs.

4. Now you can unpick the old stitching and separate the fabric. Once you unpick a seat or a back make sure you keep them together so you don't lose any parts, roll them up together is the best way.

5. Once this is done you can roll-out your fabric on a table or even a hard floor. Place the old covers on the fabric and mark around them with some chalk, normal blackboard chalk will do. Just make sure the covers are nice and flat and don't move when you mark around them.

6. Once you have them marked out cut around the chalk mark, stay to the outside of the chalk line when cutting. You can just cut one to try if you are unsure. Also don't forget to mark the new covers so you know where your sewing marks are.

7. Now you can sew the new covers together just line up the sewing marks you put on earlier and sew around the fabric. Do just one first to see how they fit.

8. Once this is all done it is time to put them back on the frames. As most dining chairs have square seats or at least square front corners start by putting the cover on the corners. Once you have the cover on just make sure the corners are nice and square before stapling.

9. Now start by putting in a temporary staple in the corners trying to keep the border at the same height. Once this is done put a staple in the middle of the front back and sides, so you should have the four corners and the four sides with a staple in them. Now staple the sides, making sure you keep the cover even, then the back and then the front: leave the corners to last. Once you have secured the sides finish off the corners doing the front ones first. You should now have the seat all stapled back together; you can now put a bottom calico on if you like.

10. You then do the backs. Most backs are envelope backs so you only have a row of staples along the bottom of the back. Start by straining the sides first and stapling them. Then do the middle of the outside back and finishing one side then the other. Cut off any excess fabric, and then do the front of the back, do it the same way as the outside back. If you are in doubt just look how the original was done and follow it.

11. Now you are ready to screw them together and you now have some brand new covers on your chairs.

Just remember practice makes perfect, if you are still unsure there are some videos available online where you can see the whole procedure, this makes it much easier to learn how to upholster your own chairs.

Sometimes nothing can beat the sense of pride and achievement that you feel when you put a soapy sponge down and stand back to look at a sparkling clean car. It's a sweat and tears accomplishment that cannot be bought - no matter how efficient your professional car washer may be or inefficient (but hardworking) the kid is next door is. Sometimes you just want to crank up the tunes and drag out the hose to give your car a good old scrub and some personal TLC. For all those times, here is a true and tested way to make sure you give your car the royal treatment:

1. Park your car in a cool and shady area 2. Assemble your cleaning supplies - you will need: a vacuum, three cloths, polish, bucket filled with water, car wash detergent, hose, professional wheel cleaner, tyre blackener, crumpled newspaper, window cleaner, trim preservative, car polish (optional), car wax (optional). 3. Clean the windows (interior) - Grab a cloth and clean the interior side of the windows with a glass cleaner. Be sure to roll each window down a little to reach any grime sitting on the top. Use crumpled newspapers to polish the glass when it's dry. 4. Wet dust the car interior - With a cloth and a few squirts of polish, clean the dashboard, central console, and other plastic parts. 5. Vacuum the car interior - After removing the floor mats, vacuum the seats and the carpet. Don't forget to vacuum under the seats, around the pedals and in the area between the front seats and the central console. Vacuum floor mats separately and use the appropriate attachment to vacuum the vents. 6. Wash the car exterior - pour some carwash into your bucket and fill it up with water. Using the hose and starting from the roof down, rinse off your car to remove any loose dirt, dust or grime. Dunk the sponge into the soapy water in the bucket and begin to wash the car in small sections before you rinse the soapy water off. Start with the roof (then rinse), the front and back of the car (then rinse), then the sides (then rinse). Always remember to continuously dunk your sponge back into the bucket to remove any dirt or grit.Rinse the whole car with a hose one final time. 7. Clean the wheels - use a professional cleaner and follow the instructions on the back of the cleaner to remove brake marks and other stubborn stains on your wheel. Apply a tyre blackener to darken and rejuvenate your tyres. 8. Dry your car - use a shamie cloth to dry your vehicle and to avoid pesky water marks. 9. Polish your car - if you have the time, apply a polish to a clean buffer pad. Apply the polish in sections onto the entire car, being careful not to apply polish to any cracks or crevices. Buff each section until you have done the entire car. Then apply the wax to the whole car to ensure your car has a nice glossy finish. 10. Clean the windows (exterior) - Grab the same cloth you cleaned the interior side of the windows with and use it to clean the exterior side. Use some of that crumpled newspaper to polish them once they are dry. 11. Clean the car trims - Use the third cloth and apply a trim preservative to the trim on your car (i.e. around the windows, etc.). Be careful not to get it on your clean windows or on any other surfaces of the car. 12. Voila! Now stand back, wipe the sweat off your brow and feel the pride as you examine your sparkling clean car. Remember, all the elbow grease and cleaning products money can buy always protect your car, but car insurance will. 12 Steps to Vehicle Repossession and Sale - The Car Repossession Process

Vehicle repossession is for the most part based on economics. A buyer purchased a car that they can no longer afford, or refuses to make payments on. Lending institutions loan money as a legal binding agreement, and when the agreement is broken and negotiations fail, cars will be retrieved from the original owner. Here is a quick review of the how and why cars are taken back by banks, and other lending institutions.

12 Steps to Vehicle Repossession and Sale, the Car Repossession Process

1. I buy a brand new car from my local auto dealership, and pay no money down, and signed a defined 5 year finance contract with the auto dealer. I lose my job 8 months later due to the economic downturn and layoffs.

2. I default on my monthly payments, and the loan company continues to require payments that I cannot, and do not pay.

3. After a few notices of failure to pay, the loan company will now inform me that it has begun legal proceedings to take possession of my car.

4. I can now try and negotiate with my loan company; if negotiations are unsuccessful the lien company will begin legal actions.

5. At this point the bank or lending institution must prove that they have a lien on the care, and the terms of any lending agreement before they can take any further actions. If they can prove this they will ask the courts to grand a levy against the car, and give me the car owner a set time frame to comply with the court order.

6. I can now either voluntarily turn the car over, or wait for the repo man to knock on my door, or repossess the car off the street where they find it.

7. The car repossession is completed when the collection agent takes possession of the vehicle once it is off my property, and on a tow truck.

At this point the bank is now the legal owner of the repossessed vehicle, and they will begin actions to sell the car. By law which varies from state to state, they will give me a set number of days to when and where the automobile will be put up for sale. This allows me the chance to buy back the car, and pay off any fees.

Car Auction Process

1. My car is now repossessed, and will be taken to a lot and held for sale at a public or private car auction.

2. The prices for the repossessed vehicles are always set on market value, which depends of the cars condition and not its history.

3. Potential buyers now get a chance to inspect the cars and determine if they wish to place a bid.

4. Most auction rules require 3 independent bids on the car, and then it is up to the lending institution that repossessed the car to determine if they will let the car go at the highest asking bid.

5. If the bid is accepted a form is filled out for the DMV bypassing the original owner.

6. The deal is final once the buyers loan is approved.
